Fool Me Once

Waking up, Elena is surprised to see that she is in a motel room. Seeing Ben asleep, Elena tries to quietly walk to the door. Elena manages to unlock the door and almost has the again off when Ben suddenly appears. Trying to compel her, he soon believes that she will obey him. Of course, being a new Vampire, he doesn’t realize that she is wearing a necklace full of verbena. As soon as he walks away, Elena tries once again to escape. Opening the door, Ben is caught off guard by the sunlight. Luckily for him, Anna was at the door too. Not trusting her anymore, Ben and Anna lock Elena up in the bathroom. Elena turns around and sees Bonnie laying in the bath tub.

Stefan once again tries to appeal to Damon to help locate Elena. Of course, Damon does not trust Stefan anymore because of being betrayed by him and Elena over the spell book. Not knowing what else to do, Stefan tells Damon that he knows it was his fault for Katherine being caught so long ago. Stefan tries to sincerely apologize but Damon wants no part of it. Getting up to leave, Damon turns around and tells Stefan that he hopes Elena dies.

At the motel, Elena tries to help Bonnie wake up by using a cool towel. Finally Bonnie comes too and is shocked to see Elena there too. Elena explains to Bonnie that Anna wants Bonnie to use her powers to unlock the spell on the tomb.

Meanwhile, at the Mystic Grill, Tyler discusses the keg party held by a guy they call Duke happening that evening. Caroline comes in and tries to convince Jeremy to go. Not really being in the mood to party anymore, Jeremy tells her no. Caroline sees Matt and tells him that since the unexpected kiss before, that she would give him an escape clause just in case he regrets it. Matt says no and that he’s fine with it and tells her he will see her at the keg party.

Damon arrives at Bonnie’s grandmother’s house Sheila to ask if he could see Bonnie. Sheila tells him no and that he is not welcomed there. Not liking to be threatened, Damon tells her to come out and threaten him. Of course Sheila doesn’t back down and uses a spell to make him cringe away in pain.

Anna has Elena come out of the bathroom to talk. Anna tells her that she could be Katherine’s doppelganger. Anna explains to Elena that it was Jonathan Gilbert that had her mother captured. Now Elena knows why Anna needs Bonnie’s help so bad. Elena apologizes for what her relative did so long ago and Anna realizes that Elena truly means it. Of course, that still won’t stop her from using Elena and bonnie.

Anna makes arrangements to meet Stefan and tells Ben to use violence if necessary when dealing with Elena and Bonnie. Once alone, Elena asks Ben for a glass of water. Taking a few sips, Elena catches him off guard and throws the water on him. He cringes away as if in pain. He soon recovers but has a little more to deal with when Stefan kicks down the door. Stefan opens the curtains and tells the girls to leave. Stefan tells Ben to leave town right away or he will kill him the next time he sees him.

While walking in the park to meet Stefan, Anna comes across Jeremy. Finally giving the relationship a chance, Jeremy asks Anna if she will go to the party with him. Agreeing, the two decide to meet there. Anna is happy to hear that the party is actually taking place near the old cemetery. Once Jeremy leaves, Anna runs into Damon instead of Stefan. In order to get what she wants, Anna threatens to kill Elena unless Damon doesn’t help her. Giving in, Damon decides to help.

Back at her grandmother’s house, Bonnie and her grandmother Sheila agree to help open the tomb. Thinking this will be the only way to get Damon to leave them all alone. Of course, they will need Damon to bring the grimoire. Stefan doesn’t think that Damon will ever agree to trust them again. Elena steps up and says that she thinks she can get him to.

Arriving at Damon’s house, Elena asks him for help and of course he declines. Trying to convince him that he could trust her, Elena takes off her necklace full of verbena, proving that he can. Elena tells him that after what they had shared in Georgia, that they will always have a strong bond between them. Seeing the truth, Damon agrees to help them.

The keg party seems to be in full swing when Jeremy arrives. The first person he runs into is Tyler. Tyler approaches him and asks if he has any pot. Jeremy tells him that he has a lot of nerve asking him after the way he’s treated him in the past. Jeremy also informs him that he doesn’t party like that anymore anyways. Tyler is mad and tells him to go away than because that was all he was good for. Telling Jeremy that he has no friends and walks away. Jeremy turns around and sees Anna standing there and he smiles.

Only staying at the party for 37 minutes, Anna and Jeremy walk a bit away from the party. Jeremy finally decides that maybe he’s ready for another relationship and asks Anna to go out with him. Anna shocks him with the news that she and her mother were moving away. Jeremy is visibly upset and leans down to kiss her. Before he can even kiss her, he sees her face change slightly. Asking her about it, Anna quickly tells him that it was nothing and before she could explain more, Jeremy is hit from behind by Ben.

After feeling silly for grabbing Matt’s hand in front of Damon and Elena, Caroline finds Matt later to do some damage control. Not wanting to chase Matt away, Caroline tells him that she did that because she just wanted to show Damon that she was with a good guy now. Matt understands and forgives her.

Bonnie and her grandmother soon begin the ritual of chanting the spell. After a few moments, the tomb opens. Damon grabs Elena and takes her in as leverage. He knows that if he goes in there alone, they would close the tomb again. Once inside, Elena hears things and finds out that it is the other Vampires. Damon explains that the Vampires sense her and her blood. Stumbling, Damon let’s her go and proceeds to find Katherine.

Stefan was off to get the supplies to burn any Vampires that escaped when he runs into Ben and Anna. Seeing that they had Jeremy, Stefan asks what they want. Anna tells him that if he doesn’t let her go, she will kill Jeremy. Stefan let’s her go. Once alone with Ben, Stefan uses his superior strength and quickly over powers him. Using the supplies he had, Stefan sets Ben on fire. When he hears Elena scream, Stefan runs after her.

Anna also arrives to enter the tomb. Bonnie tries to stop her but her grandmother tells her to go on in. Her grandmother explains to Bonnie that the seal has not been broken and that any Vampires entering the tomb will not be allowed back out. Only humans will be allowed out. Elena screams when Anna grabs her wrist to let her mother feed off of her. Telling Elena that she made a promise that it would be Gilbert blood that brought her mother back.

Bonnie tries to stop Stefan from entering the tomb knowing that he would not be able to come back out. He sees no other choice and proceeds inside to save Elena anyways. Bonnie pleads with her grandmother to help break the seal. Sheila tells her that she may not be strong enough but with Bonnie’s help, maybe it will work. They both proceed to chant the spell.

In the tomb, Stefan quickly finds Elena and tells her to leave. Once outside, Elena turns around to see that Stefan is stuck on the inside due to the spell. Bonnie explains to her what happened and Elena realizes that Stefan risked his freedom to save her. Bonnie continues to chant in hopes of freeing Stefan. Stefan runs back inside to find Damon. After breaking the seal and allowing the Vampires to leave, Bonnie watches as Anna and her mother come out.

They only have a few minutes before it closes again so Elena runs back inside to find Damon and Stefan. Stefan is there trying to convince Damon to leave the tomb. Damon is upset because he knows now that Katherine was never in the tomb. Out of rage, Damon throws the bag of blood at the wall that he had brought to rejuvenate Katherine. Finally convincing them to leave, Elena, Stefan and Damon escape before the tomb is closed again.

Damon approaches them as if in a daze. He is still stunned that after all these years, Katherine was never in the tomb. Elena embraces Damon and tries to comfort him. Damon takes off. In the woods, Elena and Stefan find Jeremy. After taking him home, they tell him that he had passed out from a few beers. He swears that he didn’t drink too much but that he doesn’t really remember. After seeing that he is fine, Elena heads back over to Bonnie’s. Once alone, Jeremy goes to his computer and types in Vampires.

Bonnie and her grandmother finally arrive home exhausted. Bonnie notices that her grandmother seems more than just exhausted. Not wanting to be fussed over, Sheila tells Bonnie she’s fine and that she just wants to lie down. Elena soon arrives to check in on them. Bonnie enters her grandmothers room and notices she’s not breathing. Racing to the bed, Bonnie begins to cry and tries to get her to wake up. Elena calls 911 but Bonnie knows that her grandmother is dead.

Anna and her mother arrive at the motel room and are shocked to see Damon waiting there for them. Damon is furious with Anna because she knew all along that Katherine was never in that tomb. Trying to save her daughter, Pearl tells Damon that Katherine had seduced a guard who was in love with her. Under her power, the guard released her and Katherine escaped. To make matters worse, Damon discovers that the last time Anna saw Katherine was in Chicago in 1983. This means that Katherine knew Damon was out there but never made an attempt to find him.

Later, Stefan finds Damon sitting before the fire in their home. Knowing what has happened and feeling upset for Damon, Stefan sits down too but never says a word. He wants to be there if Damon needs any comforting.

Back in the tomb, a Vampire still stirs. Thanks to the blood that Damon through, he is able to get his strength back. Getting up, he proceeds to the tomb wall and starts to push it open.
